How Is Date Duration Calculated?
Calculating date duration sounds simple, but calendar months aren’t all the same length — they range from 28 to 31 days — so a “months” count has to account for exactly which months are being crossed, not just an average.
There’s a difference between counting exact days (a single running total) and breaking that same span into years, months, and days (a more natural way to describe a duration, like “2 years, 3 months, 14 days”). Both numbers describe the same span of time — they’re just formatted differently for different uses.
The “include end date” option matters more than people expect. Going from January 1st to January 1st is 0 days if you’re only counting the gap between them, but 1 day if you’re counting both the start and end day as part of the total — which is exactly how many legal and rental agreements define a day count.
Leap years are handled automatically. Every four years, February gets an extra day, which adds one full day to any calculation that spans a leap year — the calculator accounts for this without you needing to think about it.
