Elapsed Time Calculator – Find Time Between Two Times Free
⭐ PopularFree elapsed time calculator — enter a start time and end time to instantly find the hours, minutes, and seconds between them. Works across midnight too
This elapsed time calculator finds the exact amount of time between any two clock times — whether you’re calculating hours worked during a shift, timing how long a meeting or task actually took, measuring a sports or cooking session, or working out billable hours as a freelancer. It works across midnight too, so night shifts running from something like 10 PM to 6 AM calculate correctly without giving you a negative or broken result. Both 12-hour (AM/PM) and 24-hour (military time) formats are supported, and there’s an optional payroll helper built in — just add your hourly rate and the calculator turns your elapsed time straight into a gross pay estimate. Enter your start and end time below to get your answer instantly.

Results are estimates for general use. For official payroll, timesheets, or legal time records, always verify with your employer or a professional.
How to use the elapsed time calculator
- Choose your time format. Use 12-hour AM/PM if that’s how you normally speak about time in everyday US or UK life. Switch to 24-hour military time if you work in healthcare, the military, transport, or an international workplace that uses the 00:00–23:59 format.
- Enter your start time. This is whatever point you’re measuring from — a clock-in time, when a meeting began, or when a timer started. For example, enter 9:00 AM for a standard morning shift start.
- Enter your end time. This field defaults to the current time so you can instantly see elapsed time right now, but you can change it to any past or future time you need.
- Enable midnight crossing if needed. Turn on the “Does this span midnight?” toggle for night shifts or overnight events. If you forget, the calculator automatically detects that your end time is earlier than your start time and prompts you to confirm whether it spans midnight.
- Read your results. The large hours/minutes/seconds result is your main answer. Decimal hours (like 8.5) are what most payroll systems use. Total minutes and total seconds give you a raw count, and HH:MM:SS is a compact, universal format useful for logs and spreadsheets.
- Use the pay calculator. Click “Calculate pay?” to reveal an hourly rate field — enter your rate and the calculator instantly multiplies it by your elapsed time to give you a gross pay estimate.
Use the preset shift buttons above the inputs to instantly fill in common work schedules like 9 AM–5 PM or a 10 PM–6 AM night shift, without typing anything manually.
What can you use this elapsed time calculator for?
This tool solves a lot more than a simple time-math question — here’s where it gets used every day.
Shift work clock-in/clock-out
Enter your clock-in and clock-out times to instantly see exactly how many hours you worked — ready to drop straight into a timesheet or payroll submission without any manual math.
Freelancer billable hours
Measure the precise elapsed time of a work session down to the minute, then use the decimal hours output to bill a client accurately for exactly the time you worked.
Meetings and appointments
Find out exactly how long a meeting, call, doctor’s appointment, or class actually ran by entering when it started and when it ended.
Sports and fitness timing
Calculate elapsed time for a race, workout session, swim, or cycling ride from the moment you started to the moment you finished — turn on seconds for extra precision.
Cooking and kitchen timing
Find the exact elapsed time between putting something in the oven and taking it out, or between prep steps, so nothing gets over- or under-cooked.
Night shift and overnight work
Use the midnight crossing feature to accurately calculate hours worked on overnight shifts — a 10 PM to 6 AM shift correctly comes out to 8 hours, not a negative number.

How is elapsed time calculated?
At its core, elapsed time is found by subtracting the start time from the end time — but both times need to be converted into a common unit, like total seconds, before that subtraction happens.
Simple subtraction can go wrong when minutes are involved. For example, 5:45 PM minus 2:20 PM isn’t simply “3:25” through basic subtraction — you have to borrow 60 minutes properly to land on the correct 3 hours 25 minutes. That’s exactly the kind of mistake this calculator avoids.
To get it right every time, the calculator converts both the start time and end time into total seconds since midnight, subtracts one from the other, and then converts that result back into hours, minutes, and seconds for display. When a calculation spans midnight, it simply adds 24 hours — 86,400 seconds — to the end time before subtracting, which produces the correct positive result instead of a negative one.
Decimal hours are calculated by dividing the total minutes by 60 — so 8 hours 30 minutes (510 minutes) becomes 8.5 decimal hours. All of this happens automatically the moment you enter your times, so you never have to do the conversion math by hand.
