This page combines two structural concrete volume calculators in one. The curb and gutter calculator estimates concrete volume by linear footage using standard APWA, barrier curb, roll curb, or custom cross-section profiles. How to Use the Curb, Gutter, Column and Beam Calculator
Step 1 — Select calculator mode
Three tabs appear at the top of the calculator: Curb & Gutter for road, driveway, or parking lot curbing by linear footage; Concrete Column for round column footings, deck piers, fence posts in concrete, structural columns, and any circular or square vertical concrete member; Concrete Beam for horizontal concrete beams by width × depth × length. All three use the same output format — cubic yards, cubic feet, and bags.
Step 2 — Set your units
The US/metric toggle appears at the top of the calculator. US mode uses inches for cross-sections and feet for length/height — the most common format for US contractors and civil engineers. Metric mode uses millimetres for cross-sections and metres for length — standard for international projects and many Canadian DOT specifications.
Step 3 — Enter dimensions (Mode A: curb & gutter)
Select the curb profile. Standard APWA (Type A) is the most common residential and municipal curb profile — a 6-inch face with a 12-inch gutter section totalling 1.25 ft² cross-section. Barrier curb is the tall vertical-face curb used on highways and arterial roads. Roll (mountable) curb is used where vehicles may occasionally drive over the curb edge. Custom allows any profile by entering individual dimensions.
Step 4 — Enter dimensions (Modes B and C: column and beam)
For round columns: enter diameter in inches and height in feet. For square or rectangular columns: enter side dimensions in inches and height in feet. For beams: enter width and depth in inches and span length in feet. Enter the number of identical columns or beams to get total project volume automatically without additional math.
Step 5 — Read results and adjust waste factor
The waste factor slider (default 5%) adds a buffer to the calculated volume. Always order at least 5% extra concrete to account for subgrade irregularities, spillage, and over-pour. For complex curb runs with many curves and transitions, use 8–10%. The calculator shows the adjusted order quantity rounded up to the nearest practical increment.
How to Calculate Concrete for Curb and Gutter — The Formula
Curb and gutter concrete volume is calculated by multiplying the cross-sectional area of the curb and gutter profile by the total linear length of the run. The result in cubic feet is then divided by 27 to convert to cubic yards — the standard unit for ready-mix concrete ordering in the United States.
Worked Example — Standard APWA Type A, 100 Linear Feet
- Curb: 6″ wide × 18″ tall = (0.5 ft × 1.5 ft) = 0.75 ft²
- Gutter: 12″ wide × 6″ deep = (1.0 ft × 0.5 ft) = 0.50 ft²
- Total cross-section = 1.25 ft²
- For 100 linear feet: 1.25 × 100 = 125 ft³ ÷ 27 = 4.63 cubic yards
- With 5% waste: 4.63 × 1.05 = 4.86 cubic yards → order 5.0 cubic yards
The rectangular cross-section approximation used here is a standard estimating method. Actual standard drawings from your local DOT or municipality show the exact profile geometry — for precise bid quantities on public contracts, use the official cross-section area from the project drawings rather than the simplified rectangular approximation.
How to Figure Concrete for a Circle — Round Column and Circular Footing Formula
To calculate concrete for a circular or round cross-section, use the standard cylinder volume formula: Volume (ft³) = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards. This applies to any circular concrete section — round column footings, deck piers, fence post holes, round structural columns, and Sonotube form pours.
Example 1 — 8″ Deck Footing, 4 ft Deep
- Diameter = 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft · radius = 0.333 ft
- V = 3.14159 × (0.333)² × 4 = 3.14159 × 0.111 × 4 = 1.396 ft³
- V = 1.396 ÷ 27 = 0.052 cy = 3 bags (80 lb)
Example 2 — 12″ Structural Column Footing, 8 ft Tall
- Diameter = 1.0 ft · radius = 0.5 ft
- V = 3.14159 × 0.25 × 8 = 6.283 ft³
- V = 6.283 ÷ 27 = 0.233 cy = 11 bags (80 lb)
Example 3 — 24″ Round Column, 10 ft Tall
- Diameter = 2.0 ft · radius = 1.0 ft
- V = 3.14159 × 1.0 × 10 = 31.416 ft³
- V = 31.416 ÷ 27 = 1.164 cy = 53 bags (80 lb)
