Example: 6m run at 2mm/m = 12mm total fall (≈ 1/2" total drop). The UK "fall on guttering" standard is 1:500, equivalent to approximately 1/4" per foot in US measurements.
Required Flow (GPM) = Roof Area (ft²) × Rainfall (in/hr) ÷ 96.23
This is the industry-standard formula (Q = A × R / 96.23). Select the smallest gutter whose rated capacity in GPM exceeds your required flow rate.
Example: 1,200 ft² roof at 2"/hr → required flow = 1,200 × 2 / 96.23 = 24.9 GPM — needs 6" K-style (8.9 GPM) or larger. Wait — check: a single downspout feeds only part of the gutter. For sectioned runs with multiple downspouts, divide roof area by number of sections.
Number of Downspouts = CEIL(gutter run ft ÷ 20)
One downspout per 20 feet is the standard recommendation. As an absolute maximum, one per 40 feet is acceptable. For runs over 40 ft, consider a double-slope (saddle) configuration — slope from a high centre point down to downspouts at both ends. This halves the visible total drop.
