How to use the rucking calorie calculator

Rucking typically refers to carrying a weighted backpack (rucksack), while a weighted vest distributes weight evenly across the torso — both increase calorie burn through the same load-to-body-weight mechanism.
- Step 2 — Enter body weight and pack or vest weight. Both values are required — the calculator uses the pack-to-body-weight ratio to determine how much extra metabolic effort the load adds. How rucking calorie burn is calculated — the load-adjusted MET method
Rucking is fundamentally walking with an added load. At 3 mph (standard ruck pace), the base Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) for walking is approximately 4.0 — meaning rucking at this pace burns four times the calories of sitting still per unit of time.
Research on military load carriage shows that carrying a load equal to 10% of body weight increases calorie burn by approximately 10%.
